Nigerian Navy releases list of successful applicants, set to commence interviews

The Nigerian Navy says it will begin from Friday the interview of successful candidates who sat for its Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) Course 25 aptitude test on December 2.

Suleman Dahun, the Acting Director of Information, Naval Headquarters,  disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr. Dahun, a captain, said  the interview will hold from December 15 to 23  at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Ojo, Lagos State.

The acting director urged  applicants  to check www.joinnigeriannavy.com for the list of successful candidates.

“Candidates are to note that the interview process includes screening of credentials, medical, physical fitness tests, written and oral examinations.

“They are therefore, mandated to appear with the original and photocopies of their credentials along with writing materials and other essential personal items for the week-long interview,” he said.

SSANU, NASU, NAAT shut down UNN, UniCal, RSUT others

ABUJA – ACADEMIC activities at University of Calabar, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and Rivers State University of Science and Technology were paralysed following the indefinite strike embarked upon by non teaching staff unions in the universities under the umbrella of Joint Action Committee, JAC.

Members of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, at a recent rally in Lagos.

The indefinite strike mostly affected fresh students, especially at the River State University of Science and Technology, who were to start registration as well as students under the Centre for Education Studies, CES, writing examination at University of Calabar.

The JAC that resumed strike on Monday is comprised of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.

Chairman of JAC and National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Chijioke Ugwoke had at the weekend accused the Federal Government of insincerity over the agreement the unions entered into with the government.

Speaking to Vanguard on phone, the The Vice President of SSANU, Eastern zone, Dr Leku Ador said that already students in the affected universities have already vacated the institutions.

Dr. Ador said in University of Calabar only students under the distance learning programme were still in the campus because of their examination which has been disrupted by the strike.

He said, “The whole campus is dry, there is nothing happening here it is like there is already declaration of Christmas break.”

At the River State University of Science and Technology, he said the university just reopened for new session and they were just expecting new students.

He said, “The new students are yet to arrive but if they arrive they will be stranded. Maybe the university will give date to them.”

At the UNN Nsukka, he said “Nsukka is even worse. The Vice Chancellor has been owing them and has not been paying them complete salary. For about three or four months he has refused to check off dues, which in labour law you must check off dues and remit same to the union but arbitrarily he stopped doing that.

“So the people are already angry with him and they have their internal strike.”

UNILAG, UNN, OAU top law school results

Students at the University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Obafemi Awolowo University, have emerged tops in the just-concluded Bar Finals Examination.

This was contained in the analysis of performance by universities in the August 2017 Bar final examination results of the Nigerian Law School.

While six students at the UNILAG emerged with First Class honours, four emerged from UNN and three from OAU.

Two students each also emerged with first class grade from the universities of Ibadan, Uyo, Lagos State University, Osun State University, and Babcock University.

University of Ilorin, Igbinedion University, Ambrose Alli University, Afe Babalola University, and Adekunle Ajasin University also have a student each graduating with  first class.

Out of the 515 foreign students that participated in the examination, none graduated with a first class, 134 failed and 275 passed.

The analysis showed that 73 of the foreign students graduated with second class lower, 11 upper, while 19 had conditional pass. Three of the students were absent.

Apart from the 29 students that emerged with a first class grade from Nigerian universities, 211 also emerged with the second class upper grade, 1,046 emerged with second class lower grade, 33 were absent, 333 had conditional pass, and 3,000 had pass grade.

From the result analysis, a total of 1,272 out of the 5,924 students that sat the examination failed.

The result analysis also showed that 72 per cent of students who took the examination passed.

Based on the pass rate analysis, the University of Ilorin emerged first, with 94.9 per cent, followed by the UNILAG with 93.9 per cent and Osun State University which had a total pass rate of 91.8 per cent.

From the analysis, apart from the Usman Dan Fodio University and Madonna University, other universities have their pass rates to be above 50 per cent.

Post-UTME: 13,500 students jostle for 3,500 admission spaces in FUT

The Federal University of Technology, Akure says it will only admit 3,500 out of the 13,500 candidates that wrote the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination in the institution.

The school also declared that its admission for the 2017/2018 academic session will be strictly based on merit.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Chairman, University Admissions Committee, Prof. Olatunde Arayela stated this on Monday while speaking on the ongoing Post-UTME Screening Exercise which took place on the campus of the institution from October 5 to 10, 2017.

According to the don, “ A total number of 13,500 candidates registered for the screening while the University Senate had decided that it will admit only 3,500 candidates for the academic session.”

Arayela added, “The university under the leadership of Professor Joseph Fuwape has put in place all necessary measures to ensure efficient and hitch-free screening exercise.”

“Each programme will have its own cut off mark which will be determined by its carrying capacity and only those who meet the cut-off point will be offered admission.”

Professor Arayela noted that during the policy meeting organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board involving all heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and their registrars, a Central Admission Process System was introduced to ensure that only qualified candidates are given admission based on merit. He maintained that FUTA would adhere strictly to the CAPS paradigm.

Speaking on the National Universities Commission’s decision to stop admission into management courses for federal universities of technology and agriculture in Nigeria, the don explained that the affected students had been duly notified of the development.

“A committee has been set up by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors to look into the issue,” he explained.

Cut-off point: Reps resolve to investigate JAMB

…Senate plans stakeholders’ meeting

John Ameh and Leke Baiyewu

The House of Representatives plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun, on Tuesday endorsed a resolution to investigate why the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board fixed a 120 cut-off mark for admission into the universities.

The resolution was taken after a debate by members. While some Reps sought the scrapping of JAMB, others defended the examination body.

The debate followed a motion moved by a member of the All Progressives Congress from Benue State, Mr. Hassan Saleh.

Leading the debate, Saleh stated that while JAMB set 120 points for admission into universities, it set 100 marks for placement into polytechnics or colleges of education.

He described the marks as “ridiculous,” saying many candidates scored higher marks during the last UMTE.

A member from Niger State, Mr. Adamu Chika, said it was strange for an examination body to recommend candidates for admission with 30 per cent score.

“This policy was done to favour some powerful people; let us face the fact. We are all aware that the private universities are not able to get candidates to fill their spaces,” he alleged.

A member from Lagos State, Mrs. Rita Orji, also called for the scrapping of JAMB, saying, “Let JAMB be scrapped if they are becoming irrelevant.”

But, the Chairman, House Committee on Tertiary Education, Mr. Aminu Suleiman, called for caution, advising members not to make comments that could pre-empt the outcome of the investigation.

Another member from Kwara State, Mr. Ahman Pategi, also described as “hasty” a move by members to condemn the policy without first appreciating the factors that could have led to the decision by the stakeholders.

“The people who took this decision are the professionals in the education sector. We are not professionals and we cannot claim to know more than them,” he said.

At the end of the debate, members passed the motion in a majority voice vote.

The Committee on Tertiary Education was directed to look into the matter and report back to the House within four weeks.

In a related development, the Senate has opted to call a stakeholders’ meeting to deliberate on the conflicts arising from the JAMB cut-off mark and other related admission matters.

At the plenary on Tuesday, some senators condemned the conduct of tests for applicants by universities after the candidates had passed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by JAMB.

The lawmakers, while debating a motion moved by Senator Umaru Kurfi (Katsina-Central), lamented that candidates were finding it difficult to gain admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions but found it easy in other countries.

The motion was titled, ‘The need to revisit the regulatory conflict between Joint Admission and Matriculation Board and universities in offering admission in Nigeria.’

Seconding the motion, Senator Shehu Sani, said, “JAMB has been literally ‘jamming’ the future of our young people in the sense that there have been a lot of impediments that have seriously affected their ability to get into university.

“Our concern is the fact that after JAMB (examination) is post-UTME. That becomes a series of hardship and suffering on the way to university. The problem we are facing is peculiar to us. It is easier for a Nigerian to secure admission outside this continent than it is here. Why should it be so?

In his contribution, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Barau Jibrin, said JAMB was performing better under the current administration.

“When you talk about the efficiency or integrity of JAMB, it has improved. Yes, few years back, things were not going fine with JAMB. But the current administration of JAMB is doing very well,” he stated.

He said the decision to set new cut-off marks was collectively done between JAMB, universities and other stakeholders, including the Senate committee.

He added that the schools were at liberty to raise the marks individually.

The Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, also said, “When the post-UTME test was introduced, I was then Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Education. We kicked against it because we felt then and I feel now that there is no need for this test.”

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, advised that the prayer of the motion should call for a stakeholders’ meeting between the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to review the issues and make recommendations that would be considered by the chamber.

Kurfi thereafter amended the prayer as Saraki advised and it was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.
